Module One: THe Foundation for Meeting the Developmental Needs of Children at Risk
Session 1: Understanding and Assessing Self-Esteem
We talk about the importance of self-esteem in a child's life, particularly as we meet their developmental needs during foster care. We examine the factors affecting self-esteem and engage in an activity to assess self-esteem in children and ourselves.
Session 2: Building Self-Esteem and Understanding Behavior
We examine the conditions necessary for positive self-esteem and how to create a supportative and accepting environment. We help you identify and build upon a child's personal strengths. We also help you understand the relationship between meeting needs and behavior.
Session 3: Communicating with Youth and Children, Part 1
We examine the elements of and barriers to effective communication. Because communication is so vital to carrying out all the tasks of protecting and nurturing children and working as a member of the professional team, we engage in several exercises building communication skills.
Session 4: Communicating with Youth and Children, Part 2
We explore specific skills and techniques for communicating with children, particularly attending, listening and questioning. We explore the use of interpersonal skills to build relationships, help a child cope with feelings, meet developmental needs, and instill discipline.
