Module Two

Module Two: Using Discipline to Protect, Nurture, and Meet Developmental Needs

Session 1: Promoting Positive Behavior
We consider the difference between discipline and punishment. We examine the goals of effective discipline and apply them to specific cases. We reflect on the qualities in ourselves essential for effective discipline and how our feelings can affect our decisions with children. We investigate the range of disciplinary techniques and study specific techniques to promote positive behavior.

Session 2: Promoting Self-Responsibility and Responding to Unacceptable Behavior
We explore disciplinary techniques related to promoting self-control in a child including expectations and rules. We consider how to build success in the environment. We also examine techniques to use when responding to a lack of control such as I-Messages, natural and logical consequences, as well as learn some basic guidelines for time out.

Session 3: Responding to Challenges
We study and work through a step-by-step process to address children's behavioral challenges and other issues. We practice the process through several activities in responding to common behaviors like lying, tantrums, anger, withdrawing, jealousy, etc.
